Exhibition
How can design contribute to both socially and ecologically sustainable solutions? How can it be critical and connect us in meaningful ways to the objects, spaces and services we need?”
These are the questions the events of the Vienna Design Week are seeking to answer.
The exhibition presents the workflow, background, and creative ideas behind the production of art and design works within the process of the cooperation between the European Capital of Culture – Veszprém-Balaton 2023 and the Budapest Metropolitan University.
We especially relied on the phrase “connect us”, as the collaboration between the University and the European Capital of Culture is a perfect example of how we are connected through art, culture, and design. The cooperation between the two institutions is not just a simple joint venture, as our students are all young aspiring students-creators, for whom working together is an exciting learning process.
The Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries of the Budapest Metropolitan University regularly integrates real projects based on real collaborations into its semester programme, which is why we were delighted to be part of the European Capital of Culture – Veszprém-Balaton 2023 initiative. Students and teachers worked on assignments in several areas within the framework of the courses, the results of which were selected for the Vienna Design Week presentation. The challenge produced complex results that were shaped in an ongoing dialogue process with the European Capital of Culture team on the workflow.
The relations made during the project show us how art and culture connect us. Once the concepts are developed and implemented, the final products will be an experience for visitors on the spot – for example through the Arbor of words or the card decks. In this way, the art and design products coming from the collaboration between the two organisations become a unifying force. They will be moments of experience and joyful memories.

Image album
A concept of a printed publication that is not only practical and informative but also reaches out for creative solutions, and presents the main guidelines of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 project.
These guidelines are: community building, volunteering, tradition, innovation, and sustainability.
Students should not only need their creativity, by exploring the values of the wider Veszprém and the Lake Balaton area, but they also connect the guidelines of the Capital of Culture with the values of the region.

Place name signs
The design of a unique, eye-catching installation for the 116 participating settlements which shows that public spaces are part of the European Capital of Culture programme.
In the reconsideration of the place name signs, the students developed playful and attention-grabbing solutions to the very small-scale systems (e.g. pictogram system) to large-scale installations and landscaping communication surfaces that can also function as installations.
Hungarian and French decks
A fresh redesign of Hungarian and French decks which are basic merchandise products for every generation. These decks are great gifts and memorabilia. The cards in the redesigned deck feature familiar characters, and allegories reimagined by graphic design students. At the end of the course, the students were able to carry out the printing using the tools provided at the university.

Arbor of words
The task was to design an installation which is engaging to the visitors and creates a social experience. Natural light plays the main role in this installation. Colourful plastic plates with words engraved in them are placed overhead. These elements illuminated by daylight are shown on the ground, getting the attention of the visitors.
Thinking further, we came up with three more plans:
Twist your word
This version uses the main visual element of Veszprém-Balaton 2023. Words on both sides are placed on the colourful sticks that can be turned inside-out, hence giving an opportunity to leave messages for each other.

Message in a bottle
Focuses on sustainability. Used jars are collected, cleaned, and filled with colourful water. The installation illuminated by light creates a pleasing atmosphere. Along the filled jars we would place some empty ones for the visitors to leave a message or wish.
Interactive word and colour-game
Based on the original version we redesigned the grid, so the colourful plastic elements can be moved by the visitors, making the installation a more unique and dynamic experience.

Information point
Special information points at six main institutions of Veszprém. These are the following: Dubniczay Palace, Eötvös Károly County Library, Sound Villa Multi-Functional Community Space, Laczkó Dezső Museum, Agóra Veszprém Cultural Centre and the The Petőfi Theatre of Veszprém. These info booths will match their locations and fit in the design of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 atmosphere.
